How To Install A Program On Mac?

People who firstly switching to macOS from Windows will get many questions and confusions about how to use this new OS. What is an app installer for Mac? Generally there are three different types of installers:

DMG – disk image with a .dmg extension
ZIP – compressed files of the installer
PKG – package file

How can install a program in different types on the Mac

For DMG file

  • Double-click on the DMG file on your Mac, and a new window will pop up
  • Follow the instructions to continue if you see an uninstall wizard
  • Drag the program to the Applications folder
  • After that, the app will be installed well and you can find it on the Applications folder

For ZIP file

  • Since this is an compress file of the program, you should firstly Uncompress on the computer via double-clicking on the file
  • And then open the folder, find and double-click on the application
  • Drag the program to the Applications folder to finish the installation

For PKG file

PKG file is a kind of installation package that will make changes to the system in order to let the app run its services and several modules effectively. And people usually need to take some steps to finish the installation process.

  • Double-click on the .pkg file to start the installation
  • Follow the wizard to process the installation
  • When finish, the application will appear on the Applications folder
